🎆 Firework in a Jar Experiment
Also called: “Liquid Fireworks” or “Underwater Fireworks”
🧪 Supplies Needed:
-
1 clear glass jar or tall glass (filled ¾ with warm water)
-
3–4 tablespoons of vegetable oil
-
Food coloring (assorted colors)
-
A small bowl and a fork
🔬 Instructions:
-
Fill the Jar:
Fill the clear jar about ¾ full with warm water and set aside. -
Mix Oil and Food Coloring:
In a small bowl, pour the vegetable oil. Add several drops of different food coloring to the oil (about 3–4 drops of each color). The food coloring will bead up rather than mix in. -
Stir Gently:
Use a fork to gently mix the oil and food coloring. Don’t overmix — you want small beads of color to stay suspended in the oil. -
Pour into the Jar:
Slowly pour the oil and food coloring mixture into the jar of warm water. -
Watch the Show!
The food coloring droplets will sink through the oil, then burst and swirl into the water like little fireworks!
🧠 What’s Happening? (Science Behind It):
-
Oil and water don’t mix because oil is less dense and hydrophobic.
-
Food coloring is water-based, so it doesn’t dissolve in oil.
-
When the food coloring droplets sink through the oil and hit the water, they dissolve and spread out in colorful bursts — just like mini fireworks!
