Posted on June 11, 2025

Here’s a decadent, bakery-style Chocolate and Cream Layer Cake that looks as good as it tastes — rich chocolate cake layers filled with billowy whipped cream and finished with a glossy chocolate ganache. It’s a showstopper for birthdays, holidays, or any special celebration.

🍫 Chocolate and Cream Layer Cake

🕒 Prep Time: 30 min | Cook Time: 30–35 min | Chill Time: 1 hr | Serves: 10–12

🧾 Ingredients:

Chocolate Cake Layers:

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process preferred)

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 1½ tsp baking powder

  • 1½ tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup boiling water (or hot coffee for extra richness)

Whipped Cream Filling:

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream

  • ½ cup powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Optional: 1 tbsp mascarpone or cream cheese for added stability

Chocolate Ganache Topping:

  • 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

  • ¾ cup heavy cream

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter (for shine)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Make the Chocolate Cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat until smooth (about 2 minutes).

  4. Carefully stir in boiling water or hot coffee. The batter will be thin.

  5. Pour into pans and bake 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  6. Cool completely before assembling.

2. Make the Whipped Cream Filling:

  1. Beat heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.

  2. Optional: Beat in mascarpone or cream cheese for more structure.

  3. Chill until ready to use.

3. Make the Ganache:

  1. Heat cream until just boiling, then pour over chopped chocolate and butter.

  2. Let sit 2 minutes, then stir until smooth and glossy.

  3. Let cool slightly until pourable but not hot.

🎂 Assemble the Cake:

  1. Level cake layers if needed.

  2. Place one cake layer on a platter. Spread a generous layer of whipped cream over the top.

  3. Add the second cake layer. Gently press down.

  4. Pour ganache over the top, allowing it to drip slightly down the sides.

  5. Chill 30 minutes to set before serving.

✅ Optional Garnishes:

  • Chocolate curls or shavings

  • Fresh berries (like raspberries or strawberries)

  • A dusting of cocoa powder or powdered sugar
