Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Doughnuts

Posted on December 5, 2023

Old-fashioned sour cream doughnuts are a classic treat! Here’s a recipe to make them at home:

Ingredients:

For the doughnuts:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying

For the glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 4-5 tablespoons milk or water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a separate large mixing bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and softened butter until well combined.
  3. Add the egg yolks to the sugar mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the sour cream and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  5. Flour your work surface lightly and roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a doughnut cutter or two differently sized round cookie cutters (one larger for the outer shape and one smaller for the hole) to cut out the doughnuts.
  6. Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or a deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully place the doughnuts into the hot oil, frying a few at a time. Fry for about 1-2 minutes per side or until they turn golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to flip them.
  8. Once fried, remove the doughnuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly.

For the glaze:

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk or water, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more liquid if needed.
  2. Dip each slightly cooled doughnut into the glaze, making sure to coat both sides evenly. You can also sprinkle toppings like chopped nuts or sprinkles on the glaze before it sets, if desired.
  3. Place the glazed doughnuts on a wire rack to allow the glaze to set.

Enjoy these delightful old-fashioned sour cream doughnuts as a special treat with a cup of coffee or tea!
