The Old Fashioned Custard Pie

Posted on December 30, 2023
Old-fashioned custard pie is a timeless dessert with a smooth, creamy filling. Here’s a classic recipe for you:Ingredients:

  • 1 9-inch pie crust (pre-made or homemade)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ground nutmeg or cinnamon for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the pie crust in a pie dish and crimp the edges. Set aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  4. Heat the milk in a saucepan until it’s just about to boil. Remove it from the heat.
  5. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly. This tempers the eggs and prevents them from scrambling.
  6. Add the vanilla extract to the mixture and stir until everything is incorporated.
  7. Strain the custard mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl to remove any lumps or air bubbles.
  8. Pour the custard into the prepared pie crust.
  9. Optionally, sprinkle some ground nutmeg or cinnamon on top of the custard for added flavor (traditional for custard pies).
  10. Carefully transfer the pie to the preheated oven and bake for 40-50 minutes or until the center is set. You can check for doneness by gently jiggling the pie—it should be set around the edges and slightly wobbly in the center.
  11. Once done, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack. Then refrigerate it for a few hours or overnight to chill and set further.
  12. Serve slices of the chilled custard pie on their own or with a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.

Enjoy this classic, simple, and delicious old-fashioned custard pie!
