MALVA PUDDING RECIPE

Posted on March 28, 2024

Malva pudding is a South African dessert known for its spongy texture and sweet, caramel-like sauce. Here’s a recipe to make Malva pudding:Ingredients:

For the pudding:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon apricot jam
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk

For the sauce:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similar-sized ovenproof dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Stir in the apricot jam, vinegar, melted butter, and milk until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until you have a smooth batter.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the pudding is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. While the pudding is baking, prepare the sauce. In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, butter, sugar, hot water, and vanilla extract. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved.
  9. Once the pudding is baked, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot sauce over the hot pudding, allowing it to soak in.
  10. Let the pudding sit for a few minutes to absorb the sauce before serving.
  11. Serve the Malva pudding warm, with custard, vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream, if desired.

Enjoy this delicious and comforting South African dessert!
