Chicken fried steak with gravy is a classic Southern comfort food dish that features tenderized steak coated in seasoned flour and fried until crispy, then served with creamy gravy. Here’s a recipe to make this hearty and delicious dish:Ingredients:

For the steak:

  • 4 cube steaks (about 1/4 inch thick)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the gravy:

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Season both sides of the cube steaks with salt and pepper.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well.
  3. In another shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and milk until well combined.
  4. Dredge each cube steak in the seasoned flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
  5. Dip the floured cube steaks into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
  6. Coat the cube steaks again in the seasoned flour mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  7. Heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
  8. Carefully place the coated cube steaks in the hot oil, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan.
  9. Fry the cube steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  10. Once cooked, transfer the fried cube steaks to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  11. To make the gravy, pour off all but about 2 tablespoons of the oil from the skillet. Add the butter to the skillet and melt over medium heat.
  12. Sprinkle the flour over the melted butter and whisk constantly to combine, cooking for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
  13. Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
  14. Cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until thickened and bubbly, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  15. Serve the fried cube steaks with the gravy drizzled over the top.
  16. Optionally, serve with mashed potatoes, green beans, or your favorite side dishes.
