Chinese BBQ Pork

Posted on April 29, 2024
Chinese BBQ pork, also known as char siu, is a popular and flavorful dish with sweet and savory flavors. Here’s a recipe to make it at home:Ingredients:

For the marinade:

  • 1 lb (about 450g) pork tenderloin or pork shoulder, thinly sliced or cut into strips
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey or brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper

For the glaze:

  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, whisk together all the marinade ingredients until well combined.
  2. Add the sliced or cut pork to the marinade and toss to coat evenly. Cover the bowl and marinate the pork in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top.
  4. Remove the marinated pork from the refrigerator and thread the slices onto skewers or lay them on the wire rack.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together the ingredients for the glaze: honey, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and water.
  6. Brush the glaze over the pork slices, reserving some for later.
  7. Roast the pork in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pork is cooked through and caramelized, brushing with more glaze halfway through cooking.
  8. Once cooked, remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes.
  9. Slice the Chinese BBQ pork into bite-sized pieces and serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions or sesame seeds if desired.

Enjoy your homemade Chinese BBQ pork with steamed rice, noodles, or as a filling for buns or sandwiches!
