Air Fryer Sesame Chicken

Air Fryer Sesame Chicken is a healthier version of the popular takeout dish. It features crispy chicken bites coated in a flavorful sesame sauce, all made with less oil thanks to the air fryer. Here’s how to make it at home!

Air Fryer Sesame Chicken Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Chicken:

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Cooking spray

For the Sesame Sauce:

  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional)
  • 1 garlic clove (minced)
  • 1 tsp grated ginger (optional)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (to thicken)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (toasted)
  • Sliced green onions (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chicken:
    • In a shallow bowl, whisk the egg. In another bowl, mix the panko breadcrumbs, cornstarch, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Dip each chicken piece in the egg, then coat it in the panko mixture, pressing to adhere the breadcrumbs.
  2. Air Fry the Chicken:
    • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for a few minutes.
    • Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the coated chicken pieces in a single layer in the basket, making sure not to overcrowd.
    • Air fry for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the chicken is crispy and golden brown. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165°F (75°C). Work in batches if necessary.
  3. Make the Sesame Sauce:
    • While the chicken is cooking, prepare the sesame sauce. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, brown sugar, hoisin sauce (if using), minced garlic, and ginger.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer, then add the cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water). Stir and cook until the sauce thickens, about 2 minutes.
    • Remove the sauce from heat and stir in the toasted sesame seeds.
  4. Coat the Chicken:
    • Once the chicken is done air frying, transfer the pieces to a large bowl. Pour the sesame sauce over the chicken and toss to coat evenly.
  5. Serve:
    • Garnish with sliced green onions and extra sesame seeds if desired. Serve with steamed rice or your favorite veggies for a complete meal.
