Apple pie that melts in your mouth

Here’s a recipe for an apple pie that’s deliciously tender and sure to melt in your mouth!

Melting Apple Pie Recipe

Ingredients

For the Pie Crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, chilled and cut into cubes
  • 6-8 tablespoons ice water

For the Filling:

  • 6-8 cups apples (such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces (for dotting)

Instructions

1. Make the Pie Crust:

  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the chilled butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough holds together. Don’t overmix.
  • Divide the dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or overnight).

2. Prepare the Filling:

  • In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until well combined. Set aside to let the juices develop.

3. Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

4. Roll Out the Dough:

  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Transfer to the pie pan, pressing it gently into the edges. Trim any excess.

5. Fill the Pie:

  • Pour the apple mixture into the prepared crust, spreading it evenly. Dot the top with small pieces of butter.
  • Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the filling. You can cut slits for a lattice effect or keep it whole. Trim and crimp the edges to seal.

6. Bake the Pie:

  • Cut a few slits in the top crust (if using a whole crust) to allow steam to escape. Brush the top with a little melted butter or egg wash for a golden finish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil.

7. Cool and Serve:

  • Let the pie cool for at least 2 hours to allow the filling to set. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
