Cheesy Garlic Scalloped Potato

Posted on November 2, 2023

Cheesy garlic scalloped potatoes are a creamy and flavorful side dish that’s perfect for special occasions or any time you want a comforting and indulgent potato dish. Here’s a recipe for making cheesy garlic scalloped potatoes:

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups thinly sliced russet potatoes (about 4-5 medium-sized potatoes)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or your choice of cheese)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute, or until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the flour and cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to create a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in the heavy cream and chicken or vegetable broth to create a smooth sauce. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, which should take about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add the salt, black pepper, and dried thyme (if using) to the sauce. Adjust the seasoning to your taste.
  6. In the prepared baking dish, place a layer of thinly sliced potatoes.
  7. Pour a portion of the creamy garlic sauce over the potatoes, and then sprinkle with a layer of shredded cheddar cheese. Repeat the layering process until all the potatoes, sauce, and cheese are used up, ending with a layer of cheese on top.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. If the top isn’t browned to your liking, you can broil the dish for a few minutes, but watch it closely to prevent burning.
  11. Remove the cheesy garlic scalloped potatoes from the oven, garnish with chopped fresh parsley or chives if desired, and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Enjoy your homemade cheesy garlic scalloped potatoes as a delightful and comforting side dish that’s rich, creamy, and packed with flavor!
