Chinese BBQ pork, also known as char siu, is a popular and flavorful dish with sweet and savory flavors. Here’s a recipe to make it at home:Ingredients:
For the marinade:
- 1 lb (about 450g) pork tenderloin or pork shoulder, thinly sliced or cut into strips
- 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey or brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
For the glaze:
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions:
- In a bowl, whisk together all the marinade ingredients until well combined.
- Add the sliced or cut pork to the marinade and toss to coat evenly. Cover the bowl and marinate the pork in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top.
- Remove the marinated pork from the refrigerator and thread the slices onto skewers or lay them on the wire rack.
- In a small bowl, mix together the ingredients for the glaze: honey, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and water.
- Brush the glaze over the pork slices, reserving some for later.
- Roast the pork in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pork is cooked through and caramelized, brushing with more glaze halfway through cooking.
- Once cooked, remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Slice the Chinese BBQ pork into bite-sized pieces and serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions or sesame seeds if desired.
