French Onion Beef and Pasta

Posted on April 29, 2024
French onion beef and pasta is a delicious and hearty dish that combines the flavors of French onion soup with tender beef and pasta. Here’s how to make it:Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (about 450g) ground beef
  • 8 ounces (about 225g) pasta (such as penne, rotini, or fusilli)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat and transfer the cooked beef to a plate.
  3. In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until caramelized and golden brown.
  4. Add the minced garlic to the skillet with the caramelized onions and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring to coat evenly. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  6. Slowly pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  7. Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet with the onion mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine.
  8. Add the cooked pasta to the skillet, tossing to coat evenly in the beef and onion mixture.
  9. Preheat your oven’s broiler.
  10. Transfer the beef and pasta mixture to a baking dish. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese and grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top.
  11. Place the baking dish under the broiler and broil for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  12. Remove the baking dish from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  13. Garnish the French onion beef and pasta with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.

Enjoy your delicious and comforting French onion beef and pasta!
