french onion roast

Posted on November 3, 2023
A French Onion Roast typically refers to a type of roast beef dish that is seasoned and cooked with ingredients commonly used in French onion soup. It’s a flavorful and savory dish that combines the flavors of caramelized onions, beef, and sometimes cheese. Here’s a simple recipe for a French Onion Roast:Ingredients:

  • 3-4 pounds of beef roast (such as sirloin or chuck roast)
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
  2. Season the beef roast with salt, pepper, and dried thyme. You can tie it up with kitchen twine if needed to help it hold its shape.
  3. In a large ovenproof skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté them until they become golden brown and caramelized, which can take about 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  4. Add the minced garlic to the caramelized onions and sauté for an additional 2 minutes.
  5. Push the caramelized onions and garlic to the sides of the skillet, making room for the beef roast in the center.
  6. Place the seasoned beef roast in the center of the skillet and sear it on all sides until it’s browned.
  7. Pour in the beef broth and wine (if using) to deglaze the pan. Scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  8. Cover the skillet or Dutch oven with a lid or aluminum foil and transfer it to the preheated oven.
  9. Roast the beef for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the desired level of doneness is reached. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. For medium-rare, aim for about 135°F (57°C), and for medium, about 145°F (63°C).
  10. If desired, you can add some grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese to the top of the roast during the last 10-15 minutes of cooking. Return it to the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Once the roast is cooked to your liking, remove it from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.
  12. Serve the French Onion Roast slices with the caramelized onion and garlic mixture as a flavorful topping.

This French Onion Roast is a delicious and hearty dish that brings the rich flavors of French onion soup to a classic roast beef recipe. Enjoy!
