grandma mercie’s flour tortilla with warm melted butter

Posted on February 22, 2025

Grandma Mercie’s Flour Tortillas with Warm Melted Butter sounds like a comforting, homemade treat that brings back memories of family meals. There’s nothing better than fresh, soft flour tortillas, especially when topped with warm butter. Here’s a simple recipe to help you recreate those comforting flavors at home:

Ingredients:

For the Tortillas:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or shortening)
  • 1 cup warm water (more or less, depending on the dough consistency)

For Serving:

  • Melted butter (for drizzling on top)

Instructions:

1. Mix the Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.

2. Add the Fat:

  • Add the vegetable oil (or shortening) to the flour mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work it into the flour until it looks like coarse crumbs.

3. Add the Water:

  • Gradually pour in the warm water, mixing as you go. Stir the mixture with a spoon until it forms a dough. You may need to add a little more water if the dough feels too dry, or a little more flour if it’s too sticky.

4. Knead the Dough:

  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 3-5 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a bit more flour on it, but don’t add too much, as the dough should stay soft.

5. Rest the Dough:

  • Divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball. Place them on a floured surface, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let them rest for about 20-30 minutes. This resting time helps the dough relax and makes it easier to roll out.

6. Roll Out the Tortillas:

  • After resting, take one ball of dough at a time and flatten it slightly with your hands. Then, using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into a thin circle about 6-8 inches in diameter. Don’t worry if they’re not perfectly round; they’ll still taste amazing!

7. Cook the Tortillas:

  • Heat a large, dry skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place a tortilla on the skillet. Cook for about 1-2 minutes, until you see bubbles forming on the surface, then flip it over and cook the other side for another 30 seconds to 1 minute, until golden brown spots form.
  • Remove the tortilla from the skillet and place it on a plate. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel to keep it warm. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.

8. Serve with Butter:

  • Once all the tortillas are cooked, drizzle them generously with warm melted butter. You can brush the butter over the tortillas or simply pour it on top. Serve them immediately while they’re warm and soft!

Tips:

  • For Extra Softness: If you want softer tortillas, you can add a teaspoon of sugar to the dough. It adds a touch of sweetness and helps with the texture.
  • Storage: To store leftover tortillas, wrap them in a clean kitchen towel and place them in a plastic bag. They’ll stay soft for a couple of days.
  • Serving Ideas: These tortillas are great on their own, but you can also use them for tacos, burritos, or quesadillas. For an extra treat, try them with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar, or pair them with a bowl of chili.

These Grandma Mercie’s Flour Tortillas with warm melted butter are the perfect comfort food, and they’ll make your kitchen smell heavenly! Enjoy!
