Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (plus extra for brushing)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt.
    • Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs. The butter should be pea-sized.
  3. Add Buttermilk:
    • Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk.
    • Gently stir the mixture with a spatula or wooden spoon until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.
  4. Shape the Biscuits:
    • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
    • Pat the dough into a rectangle, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
    • Using a biscuit cutter or a round cookie cutter, cut out the biscuits. Avoid twisting the cutter; press straight down and lift to keep the edges even for better rising.
  5. Bake:
    • Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each biscuit.
    • Brush the tops of the biscuits with a little buttermilk for a golden finish.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
  6. Serve:
    • Remove from the oven and let the biscuits cool on a wire rack for a few minutes.
    • Serve the homemade buttermilk biscuits warm, split open and enjoy with butter, jam, honey, or your favorite toppings.
