Italian Stromboli Recipe

Posted on August 21, 2025

Here’s a classic Italian Stromboli recipe — a delicious rolled pizza filled with cured meats, cheese, and sometimes vegetables. Think of it as a rolled-up pizza loaf, perfect for sharing or serving as a hearty appetizer.

🌟 Italian Stromboli Recipe

🧄 Ingredients

For the Dough (or use store-bought pizza dough):

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (110°F / 45°C)

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tsp salt

For the Filling:

  • ½ cup pizza sauce or marinara (optional inside, or for dipping)

  • 6–8 slices Genoa salami

  • 6–8 slices pepperoni or soppressata

  • 6–8 slices deli ham or capicola

  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese

  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • Optional: sliced bell peppers, sautéed onions, or spinach

For the Topping:

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

  • 1 tbsp grated Parmesan

  • Optional: crushed red pepper flakes

🔪 Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough (skip if using pre-made):

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

  2. Stir in olive oil, salt, and flour. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. Knead for 7–8 minutes until smooth.

  4. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

2. Preheat Oven:

  • Preheat to 400°F (200°C).

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

3. Assemble the Stromboli:

  1. Roll the dough into a large rectangle (about 10×14 inches).

  2. Spread a thin layer of sauce (if using) on the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.

  3. Layer meats evenly over the dough, then sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan on top.

  4. Add any optional veggies now.

  5. Roll tightly, starting from the long edge, jelly-roll style.

  6. Pinch the seam and tuck the ends to seal.

4. Bake:

  1. Place the Stromboli seam-side down on the baking sheet.

  2. Brush with beaten egg. Sprinkle Italian seasoning and Parmesan on top.

  3. Cut a few small slits in the top for steam to escape.

  4. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

5. Cool & Serve:

  • Let rest 5–10 minutes before slicing.

  • Serve with warm marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

🧀 Variations

  • Vegetarian: Skip the meats and add sautéed mushrooms, spinach, olives, and ricotta.

  • Spicy: Add jalapeños or crushed red pepper flakes.

  • Cheesy: Add provolone or fontina for a cheesier melt.
