Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers

Posted on February 1, 2024
Oklahoma fried onion burgers are a delicious and hearty dish that originated in the state of Oklahoma. Here’s a simple recipe to make these flavorful burgers at home:

Ingredients:

For the Burgers:

  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices American cheese (or your favorite cheese)
  • 4 hamburger buns

For the Fried Onions:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Serving (Optional):

  • Lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, or your favorite burger toppings

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fried Onions:
    • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions to the skillet.
    • Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
    • Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Form the Burger Patties:
    • Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball, then flatten them into thin patties, about 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick.
    • Season both sides of the burger patties generously with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook the Burgers:
    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place the burger patties onto the skillet.
    • Cook the burgers for 2-3 minutes on one side until they develop a crust and start to brown.
    • Flip the burgers and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes on the other side until they are cooked to your desired level of doneness.
    • Place a slice of American cheese on each burger patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  4. Assemble the Burgers:
    • Toast the hamburger buns lightly, if desired. Place a burger patty with melted cheese on the bottom half of each bun.
    • Top each burger with a generous portion of the caramelized fried onions.
    • Add any additional toppings of your choice, such as lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, ketchup, or mayonnaise.
    • Place the top half of the bun over the toppings to complete the burger assembly.
  5. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Serve the Oklahoma fried onion burgers immediately while they are hot and juicy.
    • Enjoy these delicious burgers with your favorite side dishes or fries.

These Oklahoma fried onion burgers are simple to make and packed with flavor. They’re perfect for a casual dinner or weekend barbecue with family and friends. Enjoy!
