Puff pastry sausage rolls

Puff Pastry Sausage Rolls are a delicious and easy-to-make snack or appetizer, perfect for parties, gatherings, or just as a tasty treat. With the help of store-bought puff pastry, these are quick to prepare and bake. Here’s a simple recipe for making them:

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought, thawed if frozen)
  • 1 lb (450g) sausage meat (or use sausages and remove the casing)
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme or sage (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard or ketchup for extra flavor

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Prepare the Sausage Filling:
    • In a bowl, combine the sausage meat with the finely chopped onion (if using), dried herbs, salt, and pepper. Mix well until everything is fully incorporated. If you like a bit of extra flavor, you can add a tablespoon of Dijon mustard or a bit of ketchup to the sausage mix.
  3. Roll Out the Puff Pastry:
    • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet. Cut it in half lengthwise to create two long rectangles.
  4. Fill the Pastry:
    • Divide the sausage mixture into two portions, and roll each portion into a long log the length of the puff pastry strips.
    • Place each sausage log along the center of the pastry rectangles.
  5. Form the Sausage Rolls:
    • Carefully fold the puff pastry over the sausage mixture to enclose it, pinching the edges together to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a nice finish.
    • Cut each roll into 4-5 pieces, depending on the size you prefer.
  6. Brush with Egg Wash:
    • Beat the egg and brush it over the top of each sausage roll to give them a golden and glossy finish when baked.
  7. Bake:
    • Place the sausage rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they’re spaced out for even cooking.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden and crispy, and the sausage is fully cooked (you can check the internal temperature to ensure it reaches 160°F or 71°C).
  8. Serve:
    • Remove the sausage rolls from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
    • Enjoy them with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup, mustard, or BBQ sauce.

Tips:

  • For a Crispier Texture: If you’re using a convection oven or air fryer, this will help the puff pastry puff up more, so you might want to reduce the baking time slightly.
  • Freezing: If you have leftovers or want to make these ahead of time, you can freeze them before baking. Just place them on a baking sheet to freeze individually, then transfer them to a ziplock bag or container. Bake directly from frozen at 400°F (200°C) for about 25-30 minutes.
