Salisbury Steak recipe

Posted on February 24, 2024

Salisbury Steak is a classic comfort food that features seasoned ground beef patties served with a rich and savory mushroom gravy. Here’s a simple recipe for making Salisbury Steak:

Ingredients:

For the Steak Patties:

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Steak Patties:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onions, milk, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Mix the ingredients until well combined, but be careful not to overmix, as it can make the patties dense.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4-6 portions and shape them into oval or round patties.
  4. Heat a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Once cooked, transfer them to a plate and set aside.

2. Make the Mushroom Gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, add olive oil. Sauté sliced mushrooms, chopped onions, and minced garlic until the mushrooms release their moisture and the onions are softened.
  2. Sprinkle flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw taste of the flour.
  3. Gradually pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Season the gravy with salt and black pepper to taste. Let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes or until it thickens.
  5. Return the cooked steak patties to the skillet, coating them with the mushroom gravy. Allow them to simmer for an additional 5 minutes.

3. Serve:

  1. Spoon the mushroom gravy over the Salisbury Steak patties.
  2. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a burst of color and flavor.
  3. Serve the Salisbury Steak over mashed potatoes, rice, or with your favorite side dishes.

Enjoy your homemade Salisbury Steak with mushroom gravy! It’s a comforting and hearty dish that’s perfect for a satisfying meal.
