Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Scalloped potatoes are a classic, comforting side dish featuring layers of tender potatoes baked in a creamy sauce. This recipe is perfect for holiday gatherings, family dinners, or any time you crave something warm and cheesy.

Ingredients:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
    • Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, creating a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream, continuing to whisk until the mixture thickens and starts to simmer.
    • Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Assemble the Potatoes:
    • In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer.
    • Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.
    • Layer the remaining potato slices on top, and pour the rest of the cheese sauce over them.
  4. Bake the Dish:
    • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the top.
    • Bake uncovered for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Let the scalloped potatoes cool for a few minutes before serving.
    • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.

Tips:

  • Uniform Slices: Use a mandoline slicer for evenly thin potato slices, ensuring even cooking.
  • Cheese Variations: Try using different cheeses like Gruyère, Swiss, or mozzarella for a unique flavor.
  • Add-Ins: Enhance the dish with add-ins such as cooked bacon bits, ham, or sautéed mushrooms.
  • Make Ahead: Prepare the dish up to the baking step and refrigerate. Bake when ready to serve, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time if necessary.

Enjoy your rich, creamy, and cheesy scalloped potatoes as a delightful side dish!
