Scotch Eggs

Posted on August 31, 2024
Scotch Eggs are a delicious British dish consisting of a soft or hard-boiled egg encased in sausage meat, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep-fried until golden and crispy. They make a perfect snack, appetizer, or picnic food.

Scotch Eggs Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs (plus 1 extra egg for coating)
  • 1 lb (450g) sausage meat (or 4-5 sausages, casings removed)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp ground mustard (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko for extra crunch)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

1. Boil the Eggs:

  • Place the eggs in a saucepan, cover with cold water, and bring to a boil. Once boiling, cook for 4-5 minutes for soft-boiled or 7-8 minutes for hard-boiled.
  • Transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water to stop cooking. Once cool, peel the eggs carefully.

2. Prepare the Sausage Mixture:

  • In a bowl, mix the sausage meat with salt, pepper, ground mustard, and smoked paprika until well combined.

3. Assemble the Scotch Eggs:

  • Divide the sausage meat into four equal portions.
  • Flatten each portion into a thin patty.
  • Place a boiled egg in the center of the patty, then gently wrap the sausage meat around the egg, making sure it’s evenly coated and sealed.

4. Coat the Eggs:

  • Beat the extra egg in a small bowl.
  • Roll each sausage-coated egg in flour, then dip it into the beaten egg, and finally, roll it in breadcrumbs until well coated.

5. Fry the Scotch Eggs:

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully lower the Scotch eggs into the hot oil and fry for about 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally, until the sausage is cooked through and the coating is golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.

6. Serve:

  • Let the Scotch eggs cool slightly before serving. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.

Tips:

  • Baking Option: For a healthier option, bake the Scotch eggs at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden and cooked through.
  • Seasoning: Feel free to customize the seasoning in the sausage mixture with herbs like thyme or sage, or add a bit of hot sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Serving: Serve with mustard, pickles, or a dipping sauce of your choice.

Enjoy your Scotch Eggs as a hearty and satisfying dish!
