Smothered Pork Chops

Smothered pork chops are a comforting and flavorful dish that’s perfect for a cozy dinner at home. Here’s a simple recipe to make smothered pork chops:

Ingredients:

  • 4 bone-in pork chops, about 3/4-inch thick
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth or beef broth
  • 1/2 cup milk or heavy cream
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Season the pork chops on both sides with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Sprinkle the flour over the pork chops and rub it in to coat evenly.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil or butter over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the pork chops to the skillet and sear them for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Remove the pork chops from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and cook for about 3-4 minutes, or until softened and lightly browned. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour the chicken broth or beef broth into the skillet, using a wooden spoon to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Allow the broth to come to a simmer.
  5. Return the pork chops to the skillet, along with any juices that have accumulated on the plate. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the pork chops simmer gently for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are cooked through and tender.
  6. Remove the pork chops from the skillet again and set aside on a serving plate, keeping them warm.
  7. To make the gravy, pour the milk or heavy cream into the skillet with the onions and broth. Stir well to combine and let the mixture simmer for a few minutes until the gravy thickens slightly.
  8. Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
  9. Once the gravy has reached the desired consistency, pour it over the pork chops.
  10. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired, and serve the smothered pork chops hot, accompanied by mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dishes.
