Here’s a deliciously comforting and crowd-pleasing recipe for Soft and Fluffy Indian Fry Bread Tacos — also known as Navajo Tacos. These feature golden, pillowy fry bread rounds topped with savory taco fillings and your favorite toppings. Think taco night with a soft, crispy twist!


🍽️ Soft & Fluffy Indian Fry Bread Tacos (Navajo Tacos)

🧂 Fry Bread Ingredients (makes 6 rounds):

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¾ cup warm water (more if needed)

  • 1–2 tbsp vegetable oil (for dough)

  • Vegetable oil for frying (at least 1 inch deep)


👩‍🍳 Fry Bread Instructions:

  1. Mix the Dough:

    • In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.

    • Stir in warm water and 1–2 tbsp of oil. Mix until a soft dough forms.

    • Knead gently for 2–3 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rest 30 minutes.

  2. Shape:

    • Divide into 6 equal balls.

    • On a floured surface, roll or pat each ball into a round (about 6–7 inches wide, ¼ inch thick).

  3. Fry:

    • Heat oil (350–375°F) in a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pan.

    • Fry each round 1–2 minutes per side until golden and puffed.

    • Drain on paper towels. Keep warm in a low oven if needed.


🌮 Taco Filling Ideas:

🍖 Classic Beef Taco Filling:

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1 packet taco seasoning + water

  • Cook until browned and seasoned.

🫘 Vegetarian Option:

  • 1 can black or pinto beans

  • Sauté with garlic, cumin, onion, and chili powder


🥗 Topping Ideas:

  • Shredded lettuce

  • Diced tomatoes

  • Shredded cheddar or cotija cheese
