Sourdough garlic knots

Posted on January 22, 2024
Sourdough garlic knots are a delicious twist on the classic garlic knots, adding the tangy flavor of sourdough to the mix. Here’s a simple recipe for you to try:

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the Garlic Butter:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt to taste

For Dusting:

  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dough:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm water, all-purpose flour, and salt.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size (usually 4-8 hours, depending on the strength of your sourdough starter).

2. Forming the Knots:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal-sized portions. Roll each portion into a long rope, then tie it into a knot.
  3. Place the knots on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each.
  4. Let the knots rise for an additional 30-60 minutes, or until they puff up.

3. Baking:

  1. Bake the knots in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown.

4. Prepare the Garlic Butter:

  1. While the knots are baking, mix the melted butter with minced garlic, chopped parsley, and a pinch of salt.

5. Finishing:

  1. Once the knots are out of the oven, brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture while they are still warm.
  2. Optionally, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese and red pepper flakes on top for extra flavor.
  3. Serve the sourdough garlic knots warm and enjoy!

These sourdough garlic knots are perfect as a side dish, appetizer, or snack. The tangy sourdough flavor combined with the garlic and butter creates a delicious treat that’s sure to be a hit.
